So how does the Doha Debates choose its topics?

Choosing topics for the Doha Debates, which has been produced by the Qatar Foundation for eight years and shown regularly on the BBC, has never been an easy task. Topics have to be controversial enough to have at least two sides debating, the subjects have to be topical to draw viewers -and the possibility of offending the powerful is ever-present.
