Walking past Doha Palace Hotel in Msheireb, I could see men standing outside and peering through the filmy curtained window to watch the cricket match that’s being televised. They hi-fived each other and said, “waah kya match hai yaar, last over tak kaash TV onn rahe” (Wow what a match! I hope the TV is switched on until the last over!)
There was not a single human being sitting inside on the elegant chairs of the hotel lobby, but these men could not sit there and watch the match because they are laborers, dressed in their work clothes. Most of these men are from India, Pakistan and Bangladesh…and with the Cricket World Cup just days away, they’re excited. But their only chance to see it is standing outside windows like these where you will probably be able to hear their refrain:”Kaash tv onn rahe” (I hope the TV stays switched on!)
